Whether you enjoy rom-coms or not, you are sure to have heard of “Regretting You,” one of the top-selling movies of 2025. Earning approximately $13.6 million opening weekend, it is clear that the audience was charmed and pulled in by the remarkable acting and array of stories portrayed.
With a combination of award-winning actors as well as industry rookies, the cast brings a glowing and undeniable energy to the screen. Mckenna Grace, a young actress who has been involved in the acting world nearly her whole life, stars as Clara Grant, a driven and bright teen who wants to become an actress herself. Clara’s life turns upside down when her father and aunt die in the same car crash, leaving her confused and spiraling. Her mother Morgan, played by longtime actress Allison Williams, longs to connect with Clara, but her plans are shattered when an old friend returns.
As Morgan grows closer with Jonah (who happens to be her dead sister’s fiance), Clara pulls away and is sparked with rebellious instincts. She seeks out Miller Adams, portrayed by Mason Thames, a boy who she believes brings out the best in herself. Throughout the film, she faces the relief and consequences of running away from her problems, just as any teenager would. Mckenna Grace and Mason Thames share exciting chemistry both on and off screen, as the actors have been dating for quite some time.
With the release of “Regretting You,” Mason Thames became the only actor since Jim Carrey to have three films hit number one at the box office in a single year. The live action “How To Train Your Dragon” and the horror sequel “Black Phone 2,” both starring Thames, not only allowed him to tie Carrey, but skyrocketed the 18-year-old’s fame. With only 11 professional acting credits, this is truly a remarkable accomplishment for the young actor.
Despite many believing this film is a lighthearted romance, the story is riddled with themes of grief, loneliness, and betrayal, making it a tearjerker for those who may have gone through a loss themselves. Like real life, some of the grueling conflicts are not resolved in the way people would have wanted, and happy aspects of the film quickly come to an end, but this does not stop the characters from facing their fears or giving up on each other.
Though the characters of “Regretting You” shine through the screen, the film was adapted from the best-selling book by Colleen Hoover. It may not be essential to read before or after watching the movie, but the novel explores the characters and their relationships in a greater and more detailed way, with chapters focusing on Morgan’s youth and her group of friends. The book continues to highlight the ups and downs of both being a teenager and raising one, but with more depth and higher chances to relate to the beloved characters in the movie.
So if you’re in the mood to experience a whirlwind of emotions, you won’t regret checking out this new flick!
