Therapy Dogs Come To MK!

Therapy Dogs Come To MK!

In the past few weeks, four-legged friends have been roaming the halls of Morris Knolls accompanied by their trainers. These therapy dogs have been invited to visit many classes as noted by the  “Dogs Are Welcome” signs hanging throughout the building. This relatively new occurrence is due to the  Morris Knolls pet therapy program which is currently in action and provides dogs that give comfort and emotional support to staff members and students.

Pet therapy was popularized in 1860 by nurse Florence Nightingale. She noticed that once her patients were accompanied by these animals, they felt a reduction in stress and anxiety and were overall more calm. Since then, it has been scientifically proven that a visiting dog can boost your production of endorphins which triggers a release in chemicals that emulate painkillers.Within her book, “Notes Of Nursing, Nightengale wrote, “A small animal is often an excellent companion for the sick, for long chronic cases especially.”

Creature Comfort Pet Therapy is a non-profit organization and is pleased to be joining Morris Knolls this year to provide comfort through these animals. Freshman Danna Villa, was delighted when asked what she thought of these furry-friends, “I never really went close to them but one time I was having a bad day and I saw my favorite breed, it made my whole day!” Similarly, Grace Discala smiled, “I feel like it brings a positive energy to students, teachers and brightens your day. They make you feel more comfortable”! A member of the staff wellness committee, Mrs. Lis was also able to provide insight on how she thinks the therapy dogs have helped benefit staff and students, “ I believe that the therapy dogs can help distract and alleviate the stress that people are feeling and help them pivot to a more positive, peaceful, and joyful place”!

This being said, it is clear that spending time with these therapy dogs provides many benefits that can lessen the stress and anxiety of  students and staff alike. As mental health awareness increases throughout schools today, it is important  to be exposed to anxiety reducing resources such as therapy dogs. These mutts serve as a reminder that healing and care don’t always come from traditional medicine but instead, from love and joy, such as what is provided by these animals.

Senior Samantha Antonelli, made these therapy dog visits possible. Without her work and dedication, Morris Knolls would not have been able to experience the elation and happiness that comes from spending time with these furry friends!
