Morris Knolls Gifted and Talented showcase was held on Feb.9 in the auditorium, where students of all grades gathered during their last block to see fellow classmates’ skilled performances. The show proved that talent is infinite at Knolls. From dancing to Shakespearean recitation, and student- led camera and lighting, the GT Showcase reminded audience members how skilled the student body is.
Morris Knolls coordinator of the Gifted and Talented program, and organizer of the showcase for the eighth year in a row, Mrs. Evans is very proud of what the students accomplished. She says her favorite part is that it is “all student-led”and she purposely schedules the show during the last block of the day because she “loves that students are able to showcase their talent to other students during the school day.”
Senior Matthew Nemerofsky demonstrated his acting talents by performing “Macbeth’s ‘Tomorrow’ Soliloquy”, or simply Act 5, Scene 5 of Macbeth. Nemerofsky and his friend, Zachary Glantz dressed in full Shakespeare attire including swords and furry jackets. Additionally, the sound effects in their performance were key, keeping the audience enticed throughout the skit. Nemerofsky said he chose this scene because he “really, really loves Shakespeare.” Emma Sellman, another Knolls senior, expressed how the “recitation of advanced Shakespeare was very impressive”.
Another senior, Nolan Lardiere, who has a love for entertaining and performing musically was in two acts of the showcase. One consisted of the opening number in this year’s Spring Musical, “The Wedding Singer.” When asked to describe it in one word he exclaimed “energetic.” A fellow performer, senior Erin Dawson, shared “We wanted to preview the spring musical…which is happened from March 12th to the 14th…we hope everyone enjoyed the opening number and [came] out to see the show.”
Nolan Lardiere’s other act was with another senior Grace Hanches. They sang the famous number “Time of our Life” from their favorite 80s movie “Dirty Dancing.” Senior Mady Barchetto said it was her “favorite act” and “a great finale to the showcase.”
Other skills widely varied from additional singing acts to a Buddhist Inhale Screaming feature, highlighting the broad spectrum of talents displayed on stage.
However, the talent wasn’t just on the stage, but backstage and behind the lights too. Tyler Jones, lighting crew member said he decided to partake in this showcase because he’s been a part of a crew like this since sixth grade and “it’s really fun!”
All together, the event was done beautifully and varied. Senior Anaya Shah shared that she “enjoyed how diverse all the contestants [performances] were, everyone was different, but everyone was amazing”.
Events like the Showcase, shed light on how important the Gifted and Talented program is. Students are grateful for the input and genuine kindness of its teacher-Coordinator, Ms. Evans. Senior host of the showcase, Sydney Davis highlights Ms. Evans’ impact in saying, “None of this would happen without her, she’s the best.”
The showcase not only highlights individual talents but also contributes to bringing the Morris Knolls community together in support of one another. Whether it be on stage, to students working behind the scene, or the staff that make it possible, the dedication and creativity that it takes to make this show successful speaks volumes.
Ultimately, the Gifted and Talented Showcase highlights the creativity, dedication, and various skills of students across Morris Knolls. It is events like this that remind the school community of the talents that exist all around them.
