On December 17th, feelings of nostalgia, warmth, and holiday cheer were prominent in the spectacular annual winter concert performance by the MK Choir and Advanced Band ensembles. Between stunning vocal renditions of classic holiday songs and a beautiful instrumental medley of the “Home Alone” soundtrack, there is no question that this production was one of Morris Knolls’ best.
Directed by the talented Mrs. Markowski and Mrs. Crotty, all five MK choir ensembles shone under the bright stage lights. In-school ensembles Concert Choir and Advanced Concert Choir performed contrasting versions of “Jingle Bells”, fast-paced Hanukkah songs, and mellow music, leaving the audience in awe. After-school audition ensembles Treble Choir, Chorale, and Madrigals took the diverse meaning of the holiday season to another level in their performances of songs ranging from soft, harmonious melodies to fun, upbeat gospel music. At the end of the concert, the classic MK Choir tradition of singing “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” with MK choir alumni was the shining star of the show. When asked what the most meaningful moment of the concert was, choir member Yuly Levy expressed, “When we sang ‘Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas!’” Choir member Kayleigh Quinn added that, “The ending is truly beautiful, you could see how much the audience loved it through their applause.”
Directed by Mr. Schwartz, Advanced Concert Band’s performance was definitely one to remember. The “Home Alone” soundtrack medley was exhilarating, nostalgic, and resonant throughout the auditorium. Each song of the medley featured parts where a group of instruments was prominent, but the most profound sound came from the melodious harmonies of every group combined, such as in “Carol of the Bells”.
The numerous hours of rehearsal time and diligence put into this production by both students and directors was showcased throughout the concert. Morris Knolls’ stellar arts department put on an incredible performance once again, instilling holiday spirit within many long after the curtains closed. Supported by audience member Sophia Bolislavsky, she explained how “They always do such a great job putting on a production. This one, however, was truly meaningful to me and I loved watching every minute of it.”
